The Birth of Sin City: Uncovering the Founding of Las Vegas

When was Las Vegas founded? The answer lies in a blend of history, commerce, and a hint of scandal. On May 15, 1905, the city of Las Vegas officially came into existence when Las Vegas was incorporated as the fifth city in Nevada. However, the story behind its foundation and early days is far more complex. This article will delve into the events and key figures that contributed to the birth of Sin City, highlighting the transformation of a small railroad town into a booming metropolis.

The story of Las Vegas begins in 1905, when it was a small railroad town on the way from Los Angeles to Salt Lake City. At that time, the area was called Las Vegas, Spanish for "The Meadows," because of the close proximity to two springs that provided water for the surrounding landscape. Rail workers frequented the area, squatting near the springs, and later, settlers arrived with the establishment of a post office, making Las Vegas a postal town by 1900.

Gerard M. Otis: A Cautious Expansion

Gerard M. Otis, a Canadian gunsmith and geologist, arrived in Las Vegas in the early 20th century. Otis was one of the earliest settlers in the area and sensed its commercial potential. He not only founded the first telephone exchange and encouraged incoming settlers but also delivered a hint of gambling to the younger town—kickstarting what would define the later stages of Las Vegas.1

In 1905, train service connecting Los Angeles and Salt Lake City became a reality, placing Las Vegas on a critical juncture for potential settlers. Service not only fostered community formation but also facilitated commerce.

The arrival of the railroad pulled people, businesses, and revenue to the area. According to historian Lance Gretmer, the construction of the railroad helped solidify a number of Native American tribes around the region "around the west side of the city."
